Micro switches are probably more popular than they used to be in the past. This is because of their high level of flexibility when it comes to helping appliances work. They can help the appliances in your home to function very well as expected. Furthermore, they are very reliable and durable which is one of the reasons why they are becoming more preferred for electrical projects. Finally, they are very affordable. It is expected that in the nearest future, more devices will require the use of micro switches.
Despite the functionalities of these switches, it is important to note that most people can’t make it work. Most of the time, the switches are in the best of condition as you only need to understand how it is wired in order to ensure it is powering your device. In order to do this successfully, a micro switch diagram will be required. In case you are searching for where to find such diagram, this post will be making it available. It will also explain how to successfully wire your micro switch based on the details in such diagram.
What is a micro switch diagram?
This is a diagram which displays the various components of a micro switch in order to help you know how it is wired. If you are using a micro switch for the first time, it is important to know how the components have been structured. This gives you a clue on how it can be wired to ensure proper functioning. Through the diagram, it becomes much easier understanding how each components have been designed to work. There is no need to panic since the components aren’t complicated to understand. They will be further explained through the diagram below.
Explanation of the diagram
Before talking about how to wire a micro switch in the diagram, it is important to understand the various components. Most micro switches you will find in the market today have been built in a similar way as the one presented in the diagram above. In other words, they usually have 3 points of connection. These are known as: Common, Normally closed, and Normally open
They are usually designated as C, NC and NO. Once it has been wired correctly, your device can be automatically switched on/off whenever the switch is pressed. It means you don’t have to do any extra work. Below is another diagram for much better understanding:
The micro switch can be said to be in a “resting state’ whenever it isn’t working. This is the state whereby the switch hasn’t been pressed. In this situation, there is a contact between the common and normally closed. It is a situation whereby the device isn’t working. However, once the switch is pressed, there will be an automatic contact between common and normally open. This will make your device to be powered on. Once you release your hand from the switch, it goes back into the resting state. This means the device will be turned on. Electricity is always flowing through the Common.
Based on the diagrams presented above, it is obvious that micro switches are usually of two types. These are known as miniature switches and subminiature switches. They will look different in terms of designs but their components and connection points are similar. Although there are other types of micro switches, these two are the most common.
How to wire a switch diagram
Based on the diagram and explanations above, there is no doubt you now understand how the components in a micro switch do function. In order to commence the process of wiring a micro switch based on the diagram, some items will be required. These are:
Battery (to function as the power source)
Please note that this is in the case of using a micro switch to power one bulb.
Turning on a device
In order to turn the bulb on as displayed on the diagram above, ensure the wire is running from the battery (positive) to the normally open (NO). There should be another wire running from the common to the bulb. Also, another wire should run from the battery (negative) to the bulb. From the above diagram, it is obvious you need three wires in order to make a device turn on using a micro switch.
Turning a device off
This is almost the same process as explained above with a slight difference. In this instance, a wire should run from the normally closed to the battery’s positive which is functioning as the power source. Another wire will be used to connect the common and your device. There should also be another wire running from the battery’s negative to the device.
Putting it all together
Once the above steps have been taken, the bulb can be switched on and off automatically whenever the switch is pressed. There are instances when the connection may not work. In this case, there is every chance that you have missed out some little details. The best thing to do is go back and check whether everything has been done correctly.
Controlling two devices
It is possible for two devices to be controlled from the micro switch. In this case, a wire should run from the common to the power source’s positive. Use another wire to connect the normally open with the device to be turned on. Also, another wire should connect the normally closed and the device to be turned off. Finally, connect the power source’s negative to both devices. Just ensure the wires have been properly soldered. Once you have gotten the connections right as explained above, the devices will turn on/off anytime you press the switch.
Based on the details above, you can see that connecting a micro switch diagram isn’t as complicated as most people would want to make it sound. It is all about knowing which step to take at every given point in time. Ensure to understand the connections outlined above before starting anything.
